Overwintering Pillar Rose

I've been wracking my brain to come up with an attractive way to overwinter my Abraham Darby's which grow on beautiful wrought iron pillars flanking my front porch. I just spent a lot of time redesigning my front to be rather formal and the idea of wrapping the pillars in chicken wire, burlap or landscape fabric came up very short.

I think I came up with a solution....bamboo blinds. They're flexible so they can wrap around the pillar and I can paint them black to blend in a little bit better. I'll need to see if they will allow enough air circulation and imagine I can eliminate strips to solve that.

The other thing I didn't really want to do was to put leaves or hay in my screen because of the spring cleanup. I found a site that suggested evergreen cuttings. I can live with that solution.

Does this sound like it will work? Thanks.
