Hi catbird!

I'm growing h. 'Aureola' on the border of 7b/8a and it seems relatively satisfied.

I first planted it in deep shade, which it did not prefer. After bringing it out into partial sun it seems much happier and has better variegation. It is slow to spread, but will do so faster in loose, rich soil kept on the moist side.

I have to admit that, from a distance and to the "untrained" eye, it has been mistaken for variegated liriope, which is much more inexpensive, easier to grow and evergreen. (Just tossing that in, for whatever it's worth! LOL!).
