Took all the grass up in my backyard, made large beds and walkways outlined with rocks. Left the grass in the walkways, but the rains have killed the grass. What could be put in the walkways that would look good against beds with straw and flowers that is inexpensive?

    I love broken hazelnut shells! They look beautiful and slugs don't like to cross them. I also scatter around my hosts to keep slugs away.

    Thank you for answering but here in the south I do not know where I could find broken hazelnut shells. I'm sure the color would be beautiful.

    This is an old post, but I immediately thought of pea rock/gravel for your path. It's not totally without cost, but a little goes a long way. The natural colors in the gravel look good with perennials and grasses.

    Perhaps you could plant moss in between the rocks.

    For an inexpensive solution, I planted thyme between painted concrete stepping stones.
