suggestions for dry raised bed

zone 8b
The bed is at the base of our deck. 8x2 Faces south and gets full sun till noon. Filled with a mixture of native soil, composted peet, top soil and composted cow manure. Has to be something tough enough to stand summers with no extra attention as we are not here from June till October. Had Mexican heather there this past summer and it did o.k. but that plant needs winter protection, which I don't want to have to contnd with. So, need some thing that is long lived, tough and looks good. and maybe grows to three feet max. Looking forward to all your good help.
