Be aware that if the seed are from a grafted tree, that any seedlings will likely be different than the parent.
Viable Maple seed often require 2-3 years to germinate. A simple test for viablity of most seed, is to place them in a jar of room temperature water overnight; Those that sink to the bottom are usually viable.
Plant the seed in a pot or other container, that has good drainage. Lay the seed flat and cover with humus, compost or potting mix, no more than ¼" deep. Keep the soil moist at all times, but don't overwater. Leave the container outdoors and it would be a good idea to cover the enclosure with a wire screen mesh to prevent rodent damage.
Squirrels find Maple seed very tasty!
An alternative is, direct sowing in a seed starting bed, if you have one.

Boy thatÂs a lot of work..lol.. I have always started mine..100s at a time..in the fridge....put your seeds in a baggy, rub the bag to get the "wings off"....get some fresh potting mix and get it good and moist but not wet...put a couple of good handfulÂs in the bag with the seeds and put them in the bottom of your fridge..check in about a month..then two....watch for white roots..when they start to root take out and plant, then put the rest back in the fridge and repeat in a week or so....they need so many days of cold to get goingÂwhen I did this the first time I forgot about them and Vince pulled the bag out and some had started the second leaf...lol.. This is my way.. And I try to find the easiest way to do everythingÂlol

I stuck some in a small pot and set them outside one spring. They never sprouted that spring. I forgot about them and set the pots over by the shed. A year or two later I noticed Japanese maples growing. They died shortly after transplant however.
