Yes, you can. Try to dig the bulbs from below so they come up still holding onto a ball of soil, and replant them within hours. The cells for this year's flowers are in the biggest bulbs already, so as long as they keep their roots through transplanting they should still flower this year.

So glad this was asked! I have a related question. Last fall, for the first time, I planted some garlic. Not knowing any better (why didn't I just google "how to plant garlic"??), I didn't divide up the cloves, and instead, just planted 3 entire garlic heads very close to each other. They've been growing ever since (we had a very mild winter), and I just recently realized my mistake.

Would it be wise for me to dig them up now, divide the cloves as best I can, and replant? I hate to disturb them (since unlike the above, I'd probably need to remove a bunch of dirt to separate them out from each other) but I worry that, as crowded as they are, leaving them to grow into each other all summer would be even more harmful. Does anyone have any advice?

In retrospect, I'm not sure how I thought that planting entire heads of garlic was the right way to do it. Live and learn, I guess!

To answer your question, yes you should dig and separate the individual garlics. If you don't you will end up with tiny little bulbs of garlic that are all smushed together. Just be careful when you do it.
