General info on planting/growing leeks

Hi all,

I'd like to know if anyone can point me to a good source of information on how best to grow leeks from seed. I decided to give leeks a try this year, but I'm not sure how they compare to my other alliums (onions, garlic, etc). I've had good success growing garlic and onions here in my Z6 central NJ garden, but have never tried leeks.

Can anyone point me to some info, or better yet, share your expertise on how best to start leek seeds and grow them well?

My garlic has been in the garden since October and is looking very well now at the start of spring. I started my onion seeds in flats in a little cold-frame/plastic greenhouse, and they've mostly germinated, so I'm on schedule for them I think.

What about the leeks? Should I start the seeds now indoors or in the cold-frame? Or should I wait a couple of weeks and direct-sow them? If starting them now, will they be ready for harvest in September? Or do they need to overwinter?

Thanks for any info you can share!

Dave NJ
