It shouldn't be a problem as long as there was some basal plate on each piece. I've never done it but I have read you can take a knife and cut the larger bulbs as long as each piece has some of the basal plate.

Earthworm, although I'm also a newbie to Shallot growing (see earlier post "Shallot Startup Questions" in this forum), I'm pretty certain you'll be okay. You are definitely supposed to separate the bulbs out - basal plate notwithstanding.

I separated all the bulbs (from the grocery store) and planted in Feb - all sprouted over a month's time and are going gangbusters now.
