Getting rid of garlic

I planted garlic from the grocery store many years ago and didn't get it all out. Every year it has multiplied and I want it gone. Does anyone know how to kill it? It has taken over the area it is in and I want to use that as a flower garden. Thanks for any help.

I guess to dig up as much as possible or that you want, mow the rest and cover the area with cardboard or many layers of newspaper, then an organic mulch and cut through the layers to plant this years flowers. Next year you can direct sow but this year I would stick to plants.

Most people have problems getting garlic to grow, and you have the opposite, which is unusual. Roto tilling down to about 8 inches will help destroy these.

I would think that putting black plastic down over the bed for a month or so would cook, and kill them.

I can't believe people have a hard time getting this stuff to grow. lol It's a nightmare to me! There's a pic of the results of one package of grocery store garlic (2 heads) in the gallery if anyone wants to see it. Oh, and you can only see the grown ones. There are 1000's of babies too.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We did till it 2 years ago and it just broke up the heads and helped it to spread more. Maybe we didn't till it deep enough.

    Nancy,
I'll bet there's hundreds of top chefs around the world who would get the vapors if they knew you wanted to 'kill' all that wonderful green garlic! You've got a gold mine and don't know it. :-) I do on purpose what you did by accident.

Green Garlic is one of the best food flavoring/enhancements and chefs of renown seek it out. Use it in any recipe calling for regular garlic, but it is milder with a more mellow flavor. It does wonders for a pot of navy or other dry beans or other recipes.

To have year-round chop, saute briefly in oil [to stop enzyme action] and freeze.

I agree with Earl, Jacey. While my garlic is growing I don't bother peeling and chopping cloves anymore. I just go out and return with some leaves and chop them up. Right now the leaves are a foot long and it only takes a few. Wonderful way to get rid of your weeds, to eat them, I mean!

Earl, I don't have to worry about preserving this for the winter. It grows year 'round here! lol I do use it green and I love garlic. My husband would eat it on dessert if he could he loves it so much. It's just that you can only use so much. If anyone wants any of it for postage just let me know. You can have all you want! I don't know what type it is and it's never made very large cloves but I haven't pinched off the scapes. I wish you guys were closer so you could come enjoy the harvest whenever you need some.
