ornamental allium with smaller foliage?

I planted globemaster behind a short formal boxwood hedge, and they are growing up beautifully. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the foliage would get SO large! The foliage looks cramped in the space, and I will have to move them somewhere else. I have 2 questions:

1.) When is the EARLIEST I can dig them up and move them? Can I do it right after the bloom dies and the foliage starts to brown, or do I need to wait even longer before digging? As I understand it I can then store them in a brown paper bag until fall for re-planting right?

2.) Is there another allium (maybe even white) that has smaller leaves? Something that would fit in this spot better?

Not an allium but ....

You did not list your zone but the first thing that comes to mind are Naked Ladies ( there are other less interesting common names and I don't recall their real name sorry )

The reason they get this name is that these Amaryllis bloom before the leaves emerge and I believe they grow around zones ( 3 - 8 ) - Others probably know more.

I am wondering what you did about transplanting your allium. I just dug mine up and put them in a paper bag as the instructions said on my google search. No one responded to your question on that and I didn't find much info on it online so I am hoping for the best. You may have discovered however, that the foliage does dies down pretty quickly and disappears so the foliage doesn't look huge for all that long.
