Onion seeds are small black "squarish" things which look like seeds! Onion sets are small round things which look exactly like what they are, small onions! Plant them directly into the ground as soon as possible in Zone 5. "Pointy" end up, root end down, just barely covered, at least 4" spacing. Harvest would be roughly mid to late August.

They look like small onions because they are small onions which are called sets. Because you set them out? Anyway, plant them outside now. If you want to pull some scallions, you can plant them closer and pull every other one when it gets to scallion size. Otherwise 4-5" apart is fine.

Thanks A bunch. They will be going in the ground this weekend. Can they tolerate some shade or will they need full sun?

Full sun is best. They don't have a very wide leaf to catch the sunlight so they need all they can get.

Keep them meticulously weeded during their growth. They don't compete well.
