you sort of created a monster by not pulling them up every year when the plant was mature. now each clove in the bulb has be made another plant again and again and again for all these years. if you don't want them spray the whole thing with round up....or dig them out. you can get rid of them if you get the bulbs out of the ground stopping their ability to grow again. the plants are making the bulb right now...a couple months earlier would have been a good time to spray them out.

Thank you for your answer. I have been pulling and digging every year for about 5 years and each year the "monster gets bigger" lol. My DH is mowing that garden space now trying to keep it back so it can't grow hoping to keep it from getting the light it needs to stick it out.

Regarding getting larger bulbs, just dig up some of your garlics in late summer, replant the cloves six inches apart in good soil, and you should have good sized garlics the next year. Which you will harvest instead of creating another garlic weed patch. ;)

I'm astounded that garlic could become that troublesome. I've been letting my hardnecks scatter bulbils for years, and grow where they will. Never thought they could become such a formidable presence.

Kellygirrl, thank you for the suggestions. Believe me I have harvested them even in the winter. We use the small cloves that we find big enough to bother with. lol
