You MIGHT have a chance... Contact Paul Zimmerman as he is licensing Delbard roses in the US for distribution. He may be able to either obtain this one (after quarantine periods have been run) or it may even be one he has. You won't know until you try. Paul@paulzimmermanroses.com Kim

Gorgeous rose.... Delbard is carried here by Cool Roses, on Fort.... I'd like to find a Fla. grower of Delbards, and ask how they like them, their opinion, re: BS, chili thrips, etc. before I go ahead and order any... they sound great and sure are gorgeous...sally

OMG put me at the top of the list for that one! Paging Paul Zimmerman!!!

Paul Zimmerman answered my question. Mitsouko is in the US and will be available "over the next year or so".

    Thanks, Kim.

Wonderful Veronica! You're welcome! I'm glad I could help. Kim

Good grief, the rose is 42 years old. I'm wondering why it took so long. Maybe we'll find out after its U.S. introduction . . .

It could be anything from it was too similar to something an American producer already had in the pipeline so no one wanted to bring it it; or it was tested and found inferior all the way to Delbard didn't have an American agent at the time. I'd wondered why Great News never made it here as an introduction, but LeGrice hadn't anyone here to introduce his roses other than Wayside, and it wasn't sufficiently novel for them. Later, it was too similar to Intrigue from J&P. Kim

HMF says that Mitsouko is vigorous with disease resistant foliage.

It is very much like Edith Schurr to my eye and though I love, love, love the roses, my fort grafted ES is the worst bush in my garden. Basically one naked cane right now with two buds.

Perhaps Mitsouko will do better. I plan to find out. And I will certainly report back.

I got her last season from Palatine. Excellent rose in her first yr. Hasn't bloomed yet this yr, but I expect to see them soon.

These are some from last yr:

She was almost always in bloom. Big massive lovely blooms that fade a little, but still look great.

Thanks Beth! I actually like the look when it fades best, with the pink edging.

Beth - looking forward to seeing your second year photos of Mitsouko!

Cori - Glad to hear that Mitsouko is surviving in your hot environment. I put mine in the ground in late March 2016 when I first got it. The rose started out fairly small and stubby but consistently grew until October when it was about 3ft x 3ft. In comparison to your potted rose after the first few months, mine had fewer canes but they were thicker. This year all the canes are very thick and are growing outward at an angle as they did before. They do appear to be a little more upright but have the same tendency to cross each other sometimes, a tendency I don't see in any of my other roses. As a cut flower, Mitsouko does pretty well lasting about four or more days in the vase. Here are some of my favorite photos.

Photo from June 9, 2016 - my second flush. The first Mitsouko bloom appeared in early May. First year growth was a bit stubby and "messy" but in its second year, canes are thick, straight but growing at odd angles sometimes.

Late July 2016 - looking very yellow and not bothered by heat

Mid-August 2016 showing all the color variations that were present last year

Mid-September 2016 looking very pink and huge, about five inches across. I think this was the single largest bloom and it lasted at least five days.

One of the first 2017 spring blooms

Looking like the classic Peace rose but Mitsouko is bigger with a lot more petals and lasts longer than Peace. Fragrance this year is mild but consistent; this is better than last year when I often didn't detect any scent at all.

Hope to see photos and comments from anyone else who has this rose!

Ann your Mitsouko photos from another thread are just gorgeous and the main reason why I ordered it! Thank you for posting even *more* gorgeous photos on this thread! It's interesting that yours hasn't developed fragrance. There is a fairly strong and wonderful fragrance in mine. It is named after the famous perfume Mitsouko isn't it?

Glad to have inspired your purchase - I hope Mitsouko works out for you. I've been reading about your challenging hot climate and which roses seem to be working out for you. You might try putting this rose in the ground; my experience is that it has a lot of vigor, always actively growing and putting out leaves, buds, canes, etc. It's a busy rose that's always doing something!

I'm fascinated that your rose has a strong scent; it gives me hope that mine might develop it. I read on Wikipedia about the 1919 Guerlain perfume and how it might have got its name. I think you're right that the rose is named after the perfume. I never thought about it until you mentioned it and I'm glad you did!

Warning!! Mitsouko grows up a little and THEN it grow sideways to nearly 4 feet.

    Thanks oldrosarian!

My rose was strangling its neighbor last year by going very wide; she's staying in her lane currently and actually holding her canes upright at about a 45 degree angle, much better than last year. I think the root development that's happened in the last year is helping the situation. But I will be watching for that lateral growth!

Yes thanks Oldrosarian. I will keep mine in the pot for now, if it can take the heat, and watch the growth habit to see where it may look the best. It's nice to have the fragrance right outside the back door.... along with All American Magic and some citrus trees. Makes for a wonderful first breath as you walk outdoors. If it can handle the pot I may just keep it right there!

There is a Delbard parfum rose collection isn't there? I know the other Delbard rose named after a guerlain perfume is Nahema.

Delbard also has Shiseido and Dioressence... but are there other roses named specifically after guerlain perfumes? I'm probably not educated enough about guerlain perfumes... but I want to be!

Oldrosarian is completely right about the sideways growth, but I kind of like it to grow that way in a pot. I am really enjoying this rose! Small blooms right now due to the insane heat on the patio above 100-120 daily, but lovely and the bees like it too! Amazing fragrance. Very pink lately.

I have Peace in the same pots, same porch, here's a photo for comparison. Mitsouko is faring much better. Poor Peace looks cooked.

Can anyone comment on how shade tolerant this rose is?

    last modified: 9 years ago

Totoro I am completely guessing, but I would guess not very. Only because it handles the sun and heat so well here and because it seems to be photosensitive. In the shade I would guess either no blooms, few blooms or blooms with coloring that aren't as great as in the sun. Could be totally wrong though, so I'm not really being helpful.

Cori Ann, those blooms are beautiful especially considering how hot it is right now where you are. I'm always on the look out for fragrant multi-colors that can take the heat.

Lovely blooms Cori! Mine is taking a break after the heat wave of a week ago but I found one bloom today that's very pink like yours. Still no fragrance though, unfortunately. Over 100 degrees, mine loses some color but the blooms don't fry.

I did a collage of some of my favorite Mitsouko photos.

Mine is wide too but at least it's more vertical this year than last.

Mine hasn't bloomed nearly as much as it did last yr. Not sure what's up.

Gorgeous Ann and Beth! So pretty!

I love all these photos, nice to see what could be in the future - mine is new this year from Palatine.

Wow that's gorgeous! I wish some of the Kordes roses I see on their european site would come here! I like one called Herkules.

Still blooming so the pics keep coming. It must like being in a pot here. Crazy because the heat in that same spot almost killed an avocado tree in a container earlier this summer. Yesterday my daughter came over and placed the fragrance (in my yard at least)... pink starbursts candy. That is exactly what this one smells like here!

Just wanted to share this photo of Mitsouko being very wide on three sides. She's sprawling to the left, right, and towards the fence. Mitsouko's tallest canes are now nearly 5ft tall; is there a specific name for this type of growth where there's no upward growth in the center, just canes that grow outward lean at a wide angle. (In case you're wondering if that's a dog house in the upper left corner, it's actually a shelter for our air conditioner.)

Mitsouko is now covered with about 30 buds. One of the roses, top left is shown below. I'm still not getting any fragrance but I'm not giving up on one day experiencing that pink Starburst scent!

Ironically, I got my first experience with Mitsouko's scent this morning! It's been cool, very humid, almost like it's going to rain, and my normally dry, windy conditions are quite still. I would describe the scent as similar to my DA rose, Charlotte which DA describes as a tea fragrance.

    Ann

Has the fragrance changed lately Ann? Mitsouko is blooming currently and is the most fragrant flower in my garden (says a lot because I have quite a few fragrant flowers).

Please excuse the dust. We have a construction project going on. It makes it even more amazing this rose is so fragrant through all the dust and crazy dry heat we have been getting! Mine gets more washed out coloring than yours seems to, but the fragrance of pink starbursts candy is out of this world!

Wow! Your roses look great Cori! I can't believe how well they're doing in their very first year in super hot conditions. Mine didn't get that big or bloom as much as yours in the first year. They look like my second year roses.

Mine has not been fragrant at all. I had that one day when the weather was warm, very humid like it was going to rain, and the wind stopped. On that one day I smelled Mitsouko for the first and only time. Her scent was just like my DA rose, Charlotte which is a light but sweet tea rose fragrance. That same day, I smelled Abbaye de Cluny for the first time in five years.

Here's the last photo I took of Mitsouko in the first week of August before my trip. It was a day for funny bee photos!

Who knew bees wait their turn in line?

Ann, you have definitely encouraged me to purchase Mitsouko. I love the color changes that it goes through.

Thanks Oldrosarian for the tip on growth habit. I have just the place where she can spread out to her hearts Content

Kristine - hope you like Mitsouko and it's fragrant for you. I think it's Cori that's actually enabled you though!

NOTE: The pink rose in the second photo above is Heritage not Mitsouko; I wanted to add another bee photo and hope I didn't mislead anyone.

    Ann

Great bee shots. Heritage is a yummy pink isn't it.

Thank you Cori Ann for being the perfect enabler

I know this is an old thread, but can the sideways growth be trained upwards as a climber? The colour is perfect for where I want a small climber (not sideways growth).
