'Found' garlic, what to expect

I was going through the cabinet last weekend and came across a bulb of garlic with shoots coming out of most of the cloves. I'd normally throw this out, but decided to try growing it. Now a week later, I have 8 garlic plants about 7" tall. I know that garlic is usually planted in the Fall, but what can I expect from these plants?

Will there be bulbs at all come harvest time? Any chance there will be actual usable garlic this year? Could I just leave it in the ground until next year and harvest then?

If it turns out, it will be pretty cool. To get some good garlic out of something that would have been garbage is awesome.
