Never grown onions before.....need advice!

This is my first time growing onions and I have some questions. I bought some "bunching onions" and they seem to be doing really good and multiplying. Also, I bought some Super Star's. They also look good and are really growing. My questions are....how do I know when they are ready to harvest? Also, with the bunching onions do I just save some for starters next year or do I have to save seed? I have been gardening for years but I'm really stumped with these guys. Hope someone can help???

For the bunching onions, leave some of them in the ground, spaced a foot or so apart, and they will pop up and seed for you next year. You can also leave more in the ground just to harvest early next year. Up here in NH I have two different kinds of bunching onions, and they both bloomed a couple weeks ago; I expect them to seed within the next week.

The SuperStars should be ready when the leaves start to die off. Dig them out rather than pulling them.

Thanks UncleJohn! I appreciate the info and will follow your advice. I thought I could leave some of the bunching type in the ground but I wasn't sure that was the case. One of my Super Stars is coming up out of the ground so looks like it will be ready soon. Thanks again!!!!
