The advantage of hard pruning the roses in the Spring is that if the weather warms up in the middle of Winter and the roses emerge from dormancy, there may be buds lower on the cane that will survive to emerge at the proper time.

You can help out the roses by covering them with burlap, so they don't get the full intensity of light to waken them from dormacy. If you haven't done so already, now is a good time to bury the bud union under a few inches of soil.

It's unlikely you did any permanant damage. Many roses hold food and moisture in their canes through the winter. Early spring leaf out comes from these food stores, not from the roots. If grafted, cover the graft, if not buried, with mulch, oak leaves, or soil to protect it and the remaining cane. Wait until the soil freezes. Winter protection is to prevent the freeze thaw cycle, not to keep the soil from freezing. Your Distant Drums may be fine if own root but the hybrid tea is tender and may need protection. My Distant Drums survives winter with just a few oak leaves as protection.

I'm a firm believer in waiting until Spring to do any major pruning. I'm the block odd ball. lol

I know a few who cut their roses down to the ground each fall. They don't like the looks of dead plants in their yards during the winter months. Unfortunately, they've done this with the grafted plants they bought and now only grow root stock. They're the ones who keep asking my why their roses never bloom and don't like to hear the reason.
