Winter pruning bouquet

It is rare for me to cut roses for the house. Just about the only time I do is when I'm pruning, and the scattered roses on the plants are just too nice to discard. That is when I bring them indoors. Here is the first one of this winter pruning season.

Very beautiful! I have to admit I can't restrain myself like you since roses look so beautiful in the house. I usually don't prune until the end of January since quite a few things are still blooming.

Beautiful blooms and bouquet. The fragrance must be wonderful.

That's very pretty. It's rare for me too. Today I went out to pick a boquet for a friend who's had some difficulties lately. It was so beautiful and fragrant. I should do it more often.

Hi Rosefolly: Lovely vase and I like those bright colors. I got into roses since my hubby got 9 crystal vases tall like yours (his company gave away free). We gave away 2 vases, but am still stuck with 7 for me to fill up with flowers. I tried to give away the vases without any flowers, but no one want them. I'll have better luck giving them away if I fill them up with flowers.

Ingrid, if I wait until January I sometimes have problems with too much new growth for me to spray. That's why I prefer to start after Thanksgiving if I can manage. It doesn't happen every year.

Krista, thank you. They are all fragrant except for Jacob's Ladder, and it is so handsome I excuse this flaw.

Strawberry Hill, when my mother-in-law was in a nursing home near the end of her life, my husband visited her every weekend. I bought a dozen of those vases so he could take her flowers from my garden each time he went. I still have three or four left. You're right -- the way to give away vases you no longer want is to fill them up with flowers!

Mendocino Rose, I hope the bouquet cheers your friend. Such a kind thing to do!

Rosefolly, as usual it's all a matter of climate. I can't bear to prune roses when they're still blooming a lot and I don't spray, but in January they're about as dormant as they're going to get. The good news is that so many of my roses don't need pruning. I'm afraid that's going to change as they grow larger and start to gobble each other up.

Oh, how I wish I had beautiful winter roses like those to prune and bring inside!

Seil, I do enjoy the winter roses, but on the other hand, there is something very restful about the long pause in garden work that comes with a climate that has a true winter. It allows you to catch up on the other parts of your life. That can be a good thing, too.
