Last fall I planted garlic from a couple local grocery stores, so I don't know the variety. A couple of the plants formed cloves at the soil surface in addition to the normal bulb.

To clarify, those secondary bulbs that formed along the stems were right at the soil surface, visible before I dug them out. Is this just a quirk of some varieties? Are those some kind of scapes? A problem with how I grew them?

I'm in zone 6, Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. The soil is acidic orange clay with compost mixed in, and I added some PlantTone fertilizer in the early spring.
