I harvested 35 heads of garlic in the last few weeks and today I found that some of them have been infested with maggots. I think these are the onion maggots.

The first few of the infested ones had obvious signs of entry. The top of the bulb where it transitions into the stem had holes or large openings and the inside was turning brown. I opened the first few and saw maggots (2 or 3) eating away at the bulbs from inside the wrapper.

So I got anxious about the rest of the bulbs and I peeled off one or two wrappers on each to make sure they are ok. Most of them seem to be at this point, no obvious point of entry and no browning. But I have about 6 chesnok red bulbs with some rust coloring on the outside. I opened two of them but the cloves are completely fine inside. Now I don't know if the other ones with the rust coloring are infested. Obviously I don't want to open all of them up because they haven't been cured yet. Any idea on how to tell if a bulb is infested??

I am pickling the good ones that I cracked open so it isn't a complete waste.
