Three or four rows is more space efficient, and still manageable in that the second row in can be easily reached from either side. I actually plant mine in five row beds (also 6" O.C.) but reaching the center row is a bit of a stretch. Fortunately I am 6'3" tall :-)

You can eliminate the tiller if you apply a deep but loose mulch, such as straw.

One 25-foot double row gives us enough garlic for the year. The rows are about 14 inches apart, with 4-8 inches between plants, depending on variety. Music needs more space, but little ones like Korean Red can go closer.

That last time my beds felt the nick of tiller blades was probably 15 years ago. Last winter, I used a weathered sawdust mulch on the garlic and it did a great job of reducing weeds.

I'm planting 6" OC also, with good luck, in beds, because I don't have the linear space to do long rows. Usually 10 bulbs by 6 bulbs, and 6" of shredded leaves as mulch. Generally this keeps the weeds down all season, but this year I planted in a newly tilled bed and once the mulch was mostly broken down, the weeds really came on. Garlic crop was still really good, 270 beautiful, large bulbs in minimal space.

Yes, I put mulched leaves from my yard all over my garlic patch. I had a few weeds here and there, but I didnt have to run the tiller down the rows. But I want the ability to do so if needed. Thank you so much for your replies. I read a lot to learn and watch this forum and learn more.
