I have grown a.c. in the past but have switch to candy as they keep longer than a.c.for me.They will get big if you treat them right And the weather cooperates!!! I always used plants I bought from texas and got them in the ground as soon as I could in the spring[end of april here] in a wide row 12" on center.keep the weeds out and fertilize quit often.Plant to the depth of the first joint of your index finger. I wasn't clear about the spacing - a single onion per 12" wide row? and the spacing between plants along that row?

Also, what do you use for fertilizer?

The row is 3ft. wide , onion on each end 2 in the midle 1 ft. apart in all directions. You can make the row as long as want it.I use 12-12-12 fertilizer. YOPPER

The suggestive answer from yotter I agree with. Candy is a great tasting, more bullet proof to weather extremes and store better onion. Though, most likely will not grow to the potential size of Ailsa Craig.

I have planted 2 bunches of Ailsa Craig onions the past 2years in a small raised garden (10"x6'x10') using about 1/3 of my space. Last year I spaced them 3" and rows 3" and they were crowding each other by fall. This year I planted in April spacing them 4" and they were perfect. I live in NW MT in the Flathead Valley and the season is short (little gowth until end of May). I am about to harvest what is left as frost is threatening. They will keep in the garage til Thanksgiving or longer. I give these to all my friends who love how sweet they are. I would highly recommend to all N. gardeners.
