There is nothing mysterious about elephant garlic. Plant it like any other garlic. A bargain at $1 a clove!! Things really must cost more in New York.You can get a bushel of elephant garlic in Ohio for $3 a pound.
If you plant 4 cloves you will get an average 5 large cloves in each of the 4 bulbs. You have invested $4 and you will get a total of 20 cloves. At $1 a clove you have made $20 on a $4 investment that pays off in 9 months. Can't beat that even in the stock market.
The thing I have found over the years about elephant garlic is that it is so mild that where you use one huge elephant in a recipe, you could have used one smaller variety's clove to give the same taste. And smaller varieties tend to have a lot more than 5 cloves in the bulb. Two reasons I keep growing elephant garlic is that they are fun to see how big I can grow them and to use for roasting. I plant the Elephants just the same as all the others but a little deeper as the cloves are bigger. Usually, there are 3 to 5 cloves. sometimes one will be small. Planted, those usually make Rounds. Just planted my rounds. Biggest was 2 3/4" in diameter.

Along with the cloves you will also get some corms. (small peices at the base of the bulb). You can replant those too. It will take 2 years to get full sized heads from them though. Or you can just eat them.
From what I understand you lift them the first year (they will have become large heads with no divisions) and replant at the normal time the same fall.
