I have tried many varieties at my central NJ garden and have always had the best results with Walla Walla. That garden, however, only had about five hours of sun, so results may vary with a sunnier location.

Now that I grow vegetables at my summer home in southwestern VA with full sun, Copra is by far the best I have found. They are beautiful round sweet onions averaging around 3" and store for 8-10 months. Candy also does well for me, and I grow Alisa Craig just for the fun of having some huge onions. Several other varieties I tried there gave variable sizes and shorter storage.

In any case, be sure to select a long day variety. I have best success with plants rather than starting my own seeds. I buy the plants from Dixondale farms, and their website provides variety decriptions and lots of information on growing onions.
