I've grown Ruby Ring for the past 3 years but I think i'm gonna switch to another next season. Ruby is a decent sized onion and has good flavor but it's pretty susceptible to downy mildew which is a big issue here where it rains a lot in the spring. Even this season which was the best onion year i've seen for a while I wasn't all that happy with it's cured appearance or storing ability.
That said, I do like it's earliness compared to Redwing which is easily 2-3 weeks later but I haven't grown Redwing for so long now I can't compare other things. Johnny's just listed Red Hawk in the new catalog which seems promising.

Thank you, Mark, didn't know Rubu Ring is susceptible to PM, good to know! I decided to go with the one I liked already - Redwing. Found some good reviews on it from people even more off the latitude limit then I am. Earliness doesn't matter for me that much - I need it ready by tomato/pepper harvest for my canning needs, and Redwing is ready at least 2 weeks before it.
