Pruning Crape Myrtles

I've never understood why some crape myrtles look like bushes and others like trees but finally I get it. It's all in the way it is pruned. I need to do a lot of pruning from the bottom up on my crape myrtles because I prefer they grow like a tree. Can I do it now or should I wait until late winter/early spring?
