Cherry Tree Problem - Please Help!

I have a Cherry Tree (not fruit bearing) that our daughter gave us when we moved into this house seven years ago.

I noticed one day that half of the tree was lighter in color; then the leaves would turn yellow and drop. The trunk of the tree is a [Y],so there are two main trunks. It seems to me that the one trunk of the [Y] is affected.

The branck of at the [Y] is only three feet from the ground and it doesn't appear to have any new or recent damage at all. The tree does have a line at the [Y] that looks somewhat like a well healed scar. It's a very thin line, very thin.

If there is anything at all we can do to save the tree I would like to hear about it. I have pictures but I don't see where I could upload them. If I'm wrong about that, let me know.

Thank you so much for taking time to read and/or answer!
