Minerva?

Doesn't look like it has enough white to be Minerva. What do you guys think?

I can say, with certainty, that this is NOT Minerva. Thank goodness it's not Apple Blossom either!! Where did you get this bulb?

Can you post anything bigger? To me, the bottom photo nearly looks orange with a red center, and that may not be right? Good light without the flash would help!

I don't know how to get anything up thats bigger. I just upload my pics to photobucket and copy/paste to the forum.
I don't have more pics and the flowers have died now.

It is red, not orange. I think the center looks more orange from the flash but it is solid red besides the bits of white you can see around the edges and the white halo closer to the middle.

I bought it at Wal- mart in Newfoundland. They had 3 kinds: Red Lion, Minerva and Apple Blossom. So far Red Lion was great, this one was supposed to be Apple Blossom but I assume a Minerva (or maybe not) ended up in it's box and the 3rd hasn't bloomed yet (bought it later).

    Hi Erin,

When you upload your images to Photobucket, right under the upload button you will see a drop down menu named 'Reduce to:'. Odd that it doesn't say resize instead, but that will allow you to choose different sizes to upload. The larger you upload them, the larger they will appear here when you copy and paste the link. The 800x600 (15" screen) seems to be the best for not being to big or too small. Trust me, I had a time figuring it all out too!

They are very pretty blooms, but unfortunately they are not Minerva. I would guess Red Lion too as they appear an orangy type of red as opposed to a deep red in your photos. These mislabels are very common and especially at Wal-Mart. A few others here ended up with some really nice mislabels including some doubles! I am actually finding it fun to be surprised by what mine from there turn out to be this year! I always have a hard time getting a true Minerva for some reason though... I have so many Red Lions, Apple Blossoms and Minerva's, but I can never seem to keep myself from buying more every year...darn that CHAD! HAHA!

Maybe your third bulb will turn out to be a real Minerva. The suprise will be like getting a present! Do keep us posted on what it turns out to be!

I would say you have a Red Lion and a very PRETTY Red Lion at that. I know that they're supposed to be so "common" but I just can't help loving them. My first one was a Red Lion and it wowed the heck out of me. Don't you just love yours?

This is the Red Lion I got from them (came in a red lion box and looks like a red lion).

and now that I look closely it seems to have a few white spots on the edges too. Is that normal for Red LIon? I thought it was supposed to be solid red.

Maybe the "Minerva" WAS a Red Lion and it just had more white on it, leading me to think it was a poor specimen of Minerva.

I upload my pics on the setting for the 17" screen, wouldn't that be the biggest? Oh well, Ill fuss with it later when I have more time.

    Thanks guys

You would have to ask her for sure but I am almost 100% certain that Kristi's Red Lion had a few white edges. Kristi! Oh, Kristi! Where are you?

This is one of my Minerva bulbs, blooming last year...

    {{gwi:373417}}

There seems to be quite a variance in the Red Lion sector this season... actually, there seems to a lot of variance within several varieties this season... are the growers just getting lax? Are they selling their questionable bulbs to places like Walmart, wrapped in the guise of the most common three, hoping most won't notice?

It's been a strange year for Hippeastrums...
