Should I prune back?

I was looking out my picture window today. It was extremely windy. My kids moved nearly all my roses into the front flower bed. I have a couple on the west, but this particular bed is on the north side of the house. I have not done any protection stuff yet--in fact, may have to have a friend do it for me this year. I noticed about four of the roses have extremely long canes--approximately four feet tall. Should I prune these back now (don't want to stimulate any growth) or should I leave them alone? Usually pile about twelve inches of soil over the graft. We do not have a consistent amount of snow in this area over the winter. Would appreciate your comments. Thank you so much - Barb
