Joe Pye

I winter sowed several kinds of Joe Pye seed and not one came up. Any ideas what I could have done wrong, most everything else came up.

I winter sowed Joe Pye too and nothing came up. I thought since it does grow wild it would be an easy wser but I have nothing yet.

Join the club. I had sprouts of Chocolate JPW, but they didn't survive. I never even transplanted them. Same with Lobelia cardinalis. Dead on arrival.

This was a common problem last year, too. Looks like we're going down the same road. Add me to the list for both 09 and '10.

I got some from two seperate trades, one came up 3 weeks before the other.. but they are both there now.. I also had them in my old home.. no problems for me on these..

However, Ive had others I call fantastic failures in the past.. took years on some that others claim to be easy germinators.. after 5 years I got some larkspur! and some sea holly finally..

Keep on sowing.. it should eventually work out =)...

I got many JPW seedlings. They were very slow growing and almost half of them didn't survive, but then last week the open jug ended up directly underneath the eaves during rain. The dirt in the jug, along with seedlings, got splashed away. I got mine from a trade and still have more seeds. I think they would have ended up being a success even though they were so slow to grow (still had no true leaves).

I will also say that I did some mixing of soils for some jugs and ended up having a soil that held way too much water in some jugs. The JPW was in that soil and I think the seedling death issue may have been due to the soggy soil and not the seedlings themselves. I have, however, no experience so I could be totally wrong. I now have ProMix and will sow some more of them. Will watch and see how these perform.

I had 3 sprouts this year and none last year. I planted them out with a cover just to keep them safe. Mine were Chocolate Joe Pye. I really have trouble with these. I sowed 3 containers and got 3 sprouts in one container.

I thought with the name "Weed" it would be easy to grow.

Guess I am also a member of the club. I've been trying to grow this plant for 3 years and I have failed again this year. I think I'll stop trying now.

Mine germinated quite late a few years ago. The one plant which I treasure from the bunch now grows up to 7 feet and is a sight to behold. This plant just emerged in the last week but has already put on a foot of growth.

Sometimes when mature plants emerge I find it is indicative of when they will sprout and this is a late one.

If you ever get one to survive or know someone who has one, make more plants by rooting cuttings. I've had very good luck with pinching out a growing tip and rooting it.

My first Choc Joe Pye was purchased at a local nursery late last summer. Just to experiment, I tried a cutting last fall. That plant is now growing alongside it's parent. I took a cutting earlier this spring (I've read the spring cuttings are stronger and root easier) and it is now rooting. My experience indicates the cuttings of this plant are very easy to root.

I have dwarf Joe Pye weed sprouts coming out of my ears, thanks to the swap. Way too many to know what to do with, especially since I can't figure out exactly how dwarf they will be. But I'm happy I'll have the opportunity to find out.

If you're near Montgomery County, Md., stop by and take some of my extras!

I bought my No-Show JPW seeds from Parks. Did anyone buy some from there? I have another pack of them I was wandering if they were worth trying or assume they will not sprout either.
Good to know they will root from cuttings. But I don't know anyone that has them growing. I will buy a plant if I every run into one at a garden center but I can't ever remember seeing one.
