Was this a private garden that you worked for and acquired these bulbs or a garden center. If they were from a private garden they might be an heirloom especially where you say the bulbs themselves are small. Now I don't have a Johnsonii to compare to your picture and other than that I don't really have any Idea what they could be. They are very pretty and I'm sure someone else will have some ideas for you.

The garden I worked for is located at the University of Georgia and is called the Trial Gardens at UGA. They were planted near another group of hippeastrum that I know was johnsonii, but there are significant differences between these two groups of plants.
This cultivar (the one I'm inquiring of) is much larger in all respects. The leaves are longer, stand more erect, and are slightly lighter green, larger overall. The blooms are truer, brighter red, much more attention getting, much larger, produced on taller scapes, more impressive. The bulbs are similar in appearance, though maybe slightly larger in size.
All comparisons to the johnsonii, that is.

I will stick to my first thought that it possibly might be an heirloom and waiting for input from others. Maybe someone from down South will recognize it. It is very pretty!
