Scooped me up one of those a couple of weeks ago- love it!

Susie, pardon my ignorance, but what is it?

It is called "Veltheimia bracteata" and it is a bulb that grows and blooms in the winter and spring. During the summer it dies back and you don't water it. It has 2 flower stalks and the flowers are white and smell nice. It is from South Africa, I have about 3 different kinds of South African bulbs that I ordered from that one guy, whose name/website I cannot remember.

Oh, I don't think mine is white- orange or orangy/pinkish (it's about to start opening, I will post a pic when it is). Wanna trade babies this summer, Susie?
Lynn

Oh ya! I would love to trade! Mine are white white white. Do yours have any smell?

Susie

The blooms? I don't know- I'll have to let you know! Does yours? Looking forward to switching babies! Here's a pic of mine, not seeing a whole lot of color on the bloom yet, but it's definitely not white, does look like it will be pale, though, which is weird because I thought they would be vibrant, we'll see I guess!

The guy's name is Jim Duggan @ thebulbman.com. He said he wasn't doing it this year, was overhauling his green house or something.

All of mine from last year ended up on the ground when the dang dogs knocked them over..... *sniff*...

Good haul there! Really impressive. I've seen these now and then and just never could accept the high prices I've seen. Sounds like you got a bargain. I'm envious. They're supposed to do very well here, though I haven't grown them myself, so do keep us posted all of you growing it.

Let me check....hmmm...yes, I'm envious! :)
Thanks for sharing the pics and info.
