OT - Red foxes

What would you do if you looked out your window early one morning and saw not one, not two but FIVE red foxes playing in your garden? The den is down behind my 80 ft. long row of mature blueberry bushes. The foxes come out between 7 & 8 p.m. and chase each other around for a while. In the mornings they lick dew off strands of tall grass. This morning they were running around the whole side yard. Comments/observations welcome!

    Wow..
    Take pictures.
Send them to us! We are overrun by rabbits and squirrels!

You reminded me of some 40 years ago when our family used to spend the summer at our cottage and those beautiful animals would come around every so often. :O) They are cute!!

Make a video! Or at least some photos please.

Eileen, they're such beautiful animals, and they'll keep the plant damaging critters away.

Pictures would be great. They seem to be making a resurgence in our area, but too often the only time I see them is dashing across the road at night. One of our neighbors says there's one that hangs out under one of her trees, but it rarely ventures to this side of the neighborhood.

OMGosh,I can't believe this posting, you guys will not believe this, this was SO exciting!
Last week, we were sitting on the porch, when we spotted young fox in the yard,he also, spotted us,and ran into the woods,in the next few days, we put out food for him, so he was coming around, and waiting for us to go into the house, so he could come get his goodies.
We threw out a couple of brats, I went upstaire, because we have a large eyebrow window up there, and you can see almost the whole side of the yard, so I sat down in the rocking chair, to wait and see what would happen.
Ok, here he comes, yep, foung the first brat, ate a little, you could tell, he wished it was raw, but he ate most of it, and burried the rest, went back for the other one, and burried it under my Sum & Substance hosta,Wayne threw out a pork chop, and he took that, ran into the woods, we thought to eat it,When all of a sudden****he comes dashing, and I mean as fast as lightining, with a mother doe, on his tail,oh my gosh, I wish you all could have seen this show, round and round they went, to the front of the house, back to the side, around the house, in the back yard, running, running, running, the doe even tripped over the fox at one point, she did NOT, want him in the yard, poor little fox, one time, stopped and looked at the the doe, like,What did I ever do to you, why are you chasing me, she finally ran him out of the yard, came back, stood there, stompped her foot a few timnes, and went back into the woods, we figured, she has her babies back there. We have seen him so many times in the yard since then, we went and bought some dog food for him, and he does eat it, Now, yeaterday, he came back, and sure enough, the doe spotted him, and they went at it again, this time she ran him up the drive, and out.
We had spare ribs for super, saved all the bones, and put them out for Mr. Fox,at about 10 pm, I turned on the out side light, and there he was, running around, and burring the bones,he was so intent on what he was doing, he did not even notice the light came on, all th bones are gone this morning.
I wish I could have viedoed it for all to see,and to keep forever, just how many times do you think any ones gets to see something like this, the fox in the yard was great enough, but to see the chase with the deer and the fox, was priceless!
Now I wanna make some kind of den for him, but I am sure he has one somewhere,
We still can not figure out why he is all alone,he is very young, and so skinny, we think he got lost from mama.
Hope you could see in your minds eye,al that we saw,

trudi & pitimpinai - I did take pictures and they look pretty good on the camera. I'll download them to the computer but I haven't figured out how to post photos on this site. I tried following all the directions but am evidently photo posting challenged. I have an account with Snapfish.com so I can upload them there.
Saw the foxes again last night playing down in back and this morning my son got to see them when he delivered my 2,000 lbs. of native stone for the front walkway. He went to the quarry up in Stafford Springs, loaded up his truck and brought the stone here. We were standing on my new back steps when two of the foxes ran across the lawn. He was really excited seeing them too.
If someone can email or direct me to step-by-step instructions, I'll try again to post the pictures. Either that or I can email the pictures to someone who knows how to post them.
cAROL, the fox is alone because mama left him on his own to fend for himself. My cousin was animal control officer in town 18 years so I emailed her about the foxes here. She warned me the mama will leave the den so the kits/pups get used to being on their own and the kits will start howling. She said they'll howl at night and it sounds like a woman screaming in terror but it's just the young foxes waking up to find mama gone.

Thanks Eileen, that is good to know,we thought he was lost.
We did'nt hear any screaming, good thing, we would have thought some one was getting killed.
So your little ones will be on their own soon as well.
Oh, I wish I was getting all your stone, sounds wondereful.
We have a crew out here today, digging a trench(huge one) all the way to the out back, for the water to flow away from the house, broke a septic line, one more thing to fix, gurrrrrrrrrrrrrr, the good thing, Hubby found about a dozen good sixed stones(boulders) he said it was better than a dozen roses, I agreed.:0)
Gotta love a guy like that eh.

For those of you not posting photos for whatever reason, please keep trying as they are so appreciated by all of us. If you use the search function you will find many postings and one of them might help you.

As a last resort perhaps you can link to your photo site account so we can access your photos there. To do that copy the album site URL in the Optional Link URL box below the message box and then write a name for the link in the Name of the Link Box (also below.)

Be sure you have marked that your photo albums are open to share with the public.

Love all the fox stories. Been awhile since I have seen a fox in our area.

Wow, that is amazing! I've never seen a fox outside of a zoo. Nice you have photos to remember your adventure. Thanks for posting!

I saw them out there again this morning as I was getting ready for work. It was light really early given this is the solstice so they were frisking around. I didn't have time to take pictures this morning. Not sure I'll see them tonight--neighbor who mows with throttle wide open on his walk-behind mower may have scared them off. Takes him 2+ hours to mow so the noise is enough to waken the dead.
I'll keep taking pictures as long as they continue to show up mornings/evenings.

Nice photos. They are beautiful animals, but keep the cat in if you have one.

Why keep the cats in caryltoo?
Will a fox eat a cat?
    cAROL

Hosta...they might...they do eat small mammals like rabbits...so a cat would not be out of the question...But I imagine a cat would give a lil more fight then a rabbit..

We have a family that has taken up residence in our woods out back, a mom and two pups. The male was hanging around all winter, but hasn't been spotted lately. As beautiful as they are to look at, I'm not too thrilled to see them. Not too many years ago we raised ducks as pets for our children and no matter what we did to protect them, the foxes always got them. They are voracious hunters and I have seen them chase my cats up trees. They have been up on my deck and front step. I really hope they find a different place to live than here. I hate worrying about my cats all the time.

    ฺำBeautiful.
Thank you for posting. I would like a fox in my neighborhood than stray cats and rabbits.

I have seen a red fox in my neighborhood once or twice, if I'm out walking in the early morning, but this evening, I was riding my bike back from the community garden, and there were a couple of them chasing each other around on a slope just below a field that is sometimes used for grazing sheep. At first I thought they were chasing a rabbit or something. I couldn't tell if they were playing, or if it was a territory dispute, but I had to stop and watch. It was the first time I have ever seen more than one at a time.

As others have noted they will hunt a cat. I wouldn't take the chance.
