A lot depends on how cold it gets. The roots of plants in pots can experience much colder temperatures than they would if they were in the ground. Too cold and the roots and plant will be killed.

I frequently overwinter potted plants in my unheated, detached garage. I built a platform in front of a north facing window where I place the pots. They get light all winter but no sun. I water them if they get dry. When temperatures drop, they seldom need watering. This is a window I see every time I go into the garage and I leave a bucket of water next to the plants, so it is very convenient to take care of them. If the water in the bucket freezes, I know the plants won't need watering. The garage has no south facing windows, so it maintains a very even temperature.

Thanks to both of you, really great advice. I'll drag those heavy pots in the barn, wrap and mulch them and put them in the north with a pail of water next close by.
