African Daisy, ect. (Pics)

19 years ago

Now at least I have more than one African Daisy blooming, but can't wait until there are more than one bloom per plant!

Larkspur and Daylily....love the soft muted color of these together!

I didn't wintersow these carrots, but pulled one to see whether I could grow straight ones...I can! Now how long should I expect to get nice sized carrots? They have been up for at least 2 months!

    Thanks.

    That plant in the 3rd pic and again in the Larkspur/Daylily pic is a self-sown Feverfew 'Flore Pleno'. Supposedly these aren't supposed to make very many viable seeds, but every since they first one showed up (2004) I've been pulling or moving at least 8-9 self-sown babies a year. I guess it's not as bad as common feverfew!

    Vera, is that lavender in the second pic growing? If so what variety is it. Mine always look so sickly. That looks so full and gorgeous! I love the feverfew too. All your plants look so good.~Heather

    Hey Scouttiegirl :D

    That would be Lavender 'Munstead' from wintersow 2003-2004.
    I have several of these and also 'Vera'. Both types have been wonderful growers for me. Here our annual precip is an average 17" with dry summers and low humidity. The soil drains very fast....pretty gravelly and is an alkaline pH.

    Exuse the messy German Winter Thyme to the left of the screen...I started cutting it back this morning, but got sidetracked with my camera LOL!

    thank you Vera - that is definitely going on my 'must have seed' list....

    Vera could you save seed from that for me. I thought what I had was the munstead but it looks nothing like yours. Mine is very woody and shrub like. It looks awful as half has died off on it. I do have it in a setting like you have yours. It must just be a different variety. I did wintersow some of the new T&M one this year. The elegance sky. Hopefully that will do better. =^.^=

    Thanks for the African daisy pictures. I have some young ws-ed seedlings in the garden (Zulu Prince variety) but they're a long way from blooming. I can't wait to see if they look as nice as yours.

    Heather....
    Sure I can do that! However, My Lavender could look like that too. I Prune mine up in spring...sometimes hard to like 6-8" from the ground if overgrown . When you first see new growth in spring you can rejuvinate by pruning just above the lowest point of new growth at the base. Here's a pic of one (this one might be 'Vera') which I cut back hard to about 6" because it suffered some winter damage and was also getting woody in the center. This operation was done in April after a few weeks of new growth....it bounced back wonderfully :D
    {{gwi:401626}}

    How it looked in December....you can even see how overgrown it is...hardly able to walk thru to the steps!
    {{gwi:401627}}
    And here on May 5th...about a month after pruning...

    I'll prune again lightly as I harvest the wands....rounding as I go. Then let them re-bloom and these wands I let stay to give extra winter protection. The red-headed finches and chickadees LOVE the seeds :D

    Vera, thanks so much for those photos! That is what I am doing wrong then. I never know where to cut back. Thanks for the tips. I was always afraid I would kill them off. Now they look so bad though I don't think there is any chance for them. Maybe starting some from seed again I can keep up the appearance for sure. So I am assuming the vera is hardy for you as well? Could you save me seed from both please? I want to put in an herb garden next year and would love to try both of these. I may have some other lavender seeds to share with you too. Just depends on them blooming alright. I started pink perfume last year from seed. I was successful with 3 plants. One of them has started shooting up wands and a little flowering has started. The other is the Elegance sky I started. I got 7 of those to sprout. The site says the bloom first year. So I'll keep you posted on mine as well. thanks again. They sure are beautiful. They must smell heavenly!~Heather

    Your welcome :D

    One way to tell if your plant is completely gone is to make a cut about 6" from the ground....is it brown all the way through? Green? If it's green it's revivable :D

    We for sure can work out a Lavender trade! I'd love to try some other ones :D

    BTW I dug and moved/gave away about 12 self-sown 'Munstead' this year! Wish I'da known earlier...could of sent you some! LOL!
