Thanks, No, I don't cover them. I mulch with pine needles only. The higher the better as the puesdostem is fine just below the needles. Never had a problem...

Thanks again. Last winter, my basjoos didn't make it through, so I am trying again to overwinter this winter, but I'll have to give your method a try next year. Seems like a lot less work, and saving pseudostem is always a good thing!

Just looked at your timeline. Are the pine needles packed really tight to keep the water out? I will keep one of my DC
outside this winter coming to see what happens. I'll be afraid to do anymore than that!

Also....why do you have a cage around some of your bananas in better weather? I noticed that in your months of june and july2007 one had a cage; or is that a palm?

Hey there, The pine needles settle on there own and they have some natural water repellancy. I don't believe the DC will make it through the winter in Ohio unless Al Gore is on to something...I have musa bajoo, DC and a red type banana - not sure what it is called. I bought it at Lowes in Cincy. It has the markings of a cavendish w/ red/purple under the leaves. There are a few varieties that it could be...The cages around the plants in the summer are to keep frisbees & unwanted critters away including a bunch of curious nieces and nephews. How are your cavendishes doing? Any spidermites??? Where did you get the sabel at?
