clumping bamboo question

Hi,

I have an area that I would like to shade around my backyard deck. I was thinking about trying a clumping bamboo but I'm not sure if there are any that will meet all of my requirements. I'm in 6b but our winters are long and consistently cold. In addition, the location will be completely exposed to the winter wind and is also full sun. The bamboo would need to be in the 15 to 20 foot range to effectively shade my deck. Plants that become established quickly would be a plus but I could be patient if necessary. Is there anything out there that might work well for me?

Dave,
Some great bamboo to plant for theose conditions would be the fargesia species. They are one of the cold-hardiest of all species. I think you would like Fargesiea Robusta to fit those circumstances.

THX Steve. I did a little research yesterday and went ahead and ordered a runner instead...red margin bamboo. It's for a fairly small area so hopefully containing it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. We'll see how it goes.

No Problem Dave. The Red Margin Bamboo is a very nice bamboo and you are right, it is not anywhere near as invasive as some other running species. If you every have any extra you are willing to trade, post message, i'd be glad to trade something for some.
