We divided some Bambusas here a couple of weekends ago. I like to do it before the weather gets too warm, but it is not too late, in my opinion. The best time, is after the last frost and before the first heat wave.

I have divided Bambusas at all times of the year except for the dead of Winter, with good results. If the weather is hot, just be sure to replant immediately and keep it watered well. The leaves will many times start to wilt, but will come back with plenty of water and maybe some shade, if planted in a pot.

Oh, and I meant to ask, Is yours a tight clumper, or an open clumper? Mine has culms spaced a foot or so apart from one another.

My B. tuldoides, planted with a division of 2 small culms in July 04, is so far fairly tight with about 20 culms within an 1.5 ft diameter clump.

It's already put up 2 culms this spring, and I see two more emerging now. I guess dividing it into single culms will set it back hard.

Thanks, Unautre. About half of the bamboo growers that I have spoke with have said that their tuldoides is an open clumper, and the other half say it is a tight clumper. I thought maybe it was an environmental difference, but you are close enough to me to see similar growing plants.

Maybe I don't truly have tuldoides.

Mine hasn't started shooting yet this season. It will be interesting to see how well yours does as compared to mine.

You can do it now and have done tuldoides at this time last year. I just divided some bambusa multiplex goddess up and the new divisions really like the water. Water well daily for the first month or so until the roots mend into the soil. Some mulch helps.

Kentuck, I would say mine is somewhat of an open clumper to begin with, but as it ages it visually seems to get tighter because of the massive size and height of the culms.

P.S. A recipricating saw really helps with this job.

When you say "massive size and height of the culm," how massive do you mean? I took a closer look at mine and the tallest culms are 35+ feet in height. Largest diameter is about 2 inches.
