Help- I transplanted this from a friend who said it was 'false bamboo'

I grows to about 5 feet over the winter it dies and hardens off, resprouts in the spring. Has rounded leaves, culms like bamboo- sort of a greent mottled stem

Any suggestions as to what it is?
