Anything yet?

I'll check it later. I've been busy planting my sprouted winter sown seeds and direct sowing. Forgot to look at it.

If it's a failure, what could have caused it to fail? I mulched it then covered it with insulation. Then I put the plastic 30g trash container with a thick carpet inside and another round R13 insulation at the base(top since it was inverted). Then finally, mulched it again outside about 6" think.

There are lots of reasons why your pseudo stems may not have made it. Some include:

1) Did you winterize too late or too early?
2) Does the site remain too moist during winter?
3) Was the plant large enough and established enough to overwinter?
4) Were there extreme cold temps or multiple freeze/thaw cycles during winter?
5) Did your protection method fail?

Hopefully, you will start to see some pups soon.

I have a 5 year old mat of basjoo and my pseudo stems did not make it this year in zone 6b. I am just now seeing pups starting break the soil surface.

As an insurance policy, I usually keep one or two basjoo pups growing indoors over the winter.

100%, IT'S DEAD! I lifted it and everything is brown, roots are all rotten, no signs of green. That's it. :)

Try again and this time fertilize the heck out of the Musa Basjoo and use MILORGANITE to get some size on it. Mulch well again and try using bags of leaves heaped up around it to insulate the corm, don't even worry about the stems. A guy in Iowa who is in Zone 4b has had great success with this method.

I'd give it a few more weeks to be sure if it's dead. I planted a basjoo last year and only mulched it lightly in late fall. It came back a week or so ago and is already on it's third leaf. I was almost certain it was dead at the beginning of spring, as it looked a lot worse than what you posted. I'm amazed it made it through, we got all the way down to -23F!

Imho,I find that basjoos are hit and miss in zone 5 and 6.
