Need suggestions

I ripped out a False Spirea shrub that was taking over the garden today. I think I'll cover the area with plastic and then mulch to kill all the roots. This fall I would love to take the plastic up and plant perennials that I will WS as soon as I can get the seeds.

What would you suggest for morning sun and evening sun, but very shady the rest of the day? It is a rather large area, the suckers had really traveled. I'm a zone 5, but can sometimes push to a zone 6. (For instance, I leave my glads in the ground all year. And someone I know overwinters their canna in the ground. I'm not sure how they do that yet.) I would love to grow some plants that only make it to zone 6, just to have some different plants.

Everyone is so knowledgeable here. What would you suggest?
