Pruning Trees for Fire Resistance

Just had a grass fire come thru from neighbor and burn up a total of 2 acres on our place and another 2-3 acres on neighbor's. There were several Eastern Red Cedar growing wild on neighbors with limbs to the ground and was surprised to see that the fire just went up the limbs of these green trees like it was kindling.

After looking at the results, it appears that leaving conifers (and maybe other trees) with lots of low growing limbs is a mistake if landscaping for fire resistance.

My impression is that removing the lower limbs up several feet would have prevented the fire from climbing up the tree. Anyone with knowledge on this?
