It is possible to grow certain clumping varieties from cuttings, but by far the easiest quickest and easiest method is through division.

I can take a pic and post it. I once tried to dig up a bit of the bamboo and there was no digging it out. Is there a special way? Its a pretty tight clumper.

Generally for a successful transplant you should get a good size root ball, which takes a lot of digging, sawing, and prying. Large clumpers are usually harder to dig out than runners.

Yeah, clumpers can be a little tough. Axe, prybar, sawzall and sometimes several hours of labor.

However, just taking a division from the edge shouldn't be that difficult....it's when you are wanting to split it and have to go deep in to the clump when the problems arrive.

So I can saw at the edge of my mom's bamboo stand (which is probably 8 years old now) without it affecting the rest of the plant? I don't wantr to kill it.

You're not likely to do anything to hurt the main plant. You just need to make sure you're getting a big enough chunk of root ball for the division to survive and grow well.
