Sounds like you purchased Ensete "Maurelii", a red version of the regular Ensete Ventricosum. It is also referred to as Abyssinian. It is an ornamental banana.

The can get pretty large with a hefty pstem. The more sun it gets, the redder it gets. Very beautiful banana plant.

It won't produce any pups. If you want more of them, you would have to cut the pstem all the way down and chop it up. It forces the plant to produce tons of pups.

Thanks for the info all ! I purchased it for its size and was hoping it was the right varity. Just aquired a Thia Black and discovered yesterday one of my Ice Cream's has sprouted or come back to life after the harsh winter we had. Being June,I almost dug it up to make room for another plant.
