Salvaging Black Bamboo

I posted earlier about some bamboo I planted that did not do well. I planted a 5 gallon "plant" with a 4 foot culm in my bird pen. It started growing new shoots, but they died. I do not know if the birds ate the new shoots, or if it was getting too much sun in close to 100 degree weather. I dug it up and now have it in a pot in the shade. The culm is brown and apparently dead. I am going to keep it to see if it might rejuvenate. Should I cut off the culm or leave it alone? I am looking for a bamboo that can live in the Texas heat that does not get very tall to go in a bird pen for pheasants to provide them some cover. The pen is 8 feet tall. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Sheila
