New bamboo

I was at one of my local nurseries and saw the biggest Q. tumidissinoda (Chinese walking stick bamboo) that I've ever seen. It told me that it wanted to come home with me, and I finally agreed. Don't ask me how much it cost, because I violated my basic rule about how much I'll pay for bamboo. It happened in a weak moment, but it's a real beauty. Here are some pictures:

very cool - thanks for sharing

Very cool, I had to clean the saliva off my keyboard before I could respond. My rule is I'll never pay more for a bamboo than I paid for my house!

that is some good looking boo you have there, didnt know you could buy it as large as that from a local nurserie! think ill have to get in the truck and take a ride around a bit .

Yes very nice, now tell us how much.

I'm guessin 2 and a quarter! (this guess comes from someone who has never seen bamboo in a nursery before.)

those of us in colder zones appreciate these pictures, Thanks!

I'll take a wild guess....It appears that bamboo out west is a bit cheaper than me here in the NE so my guess would be 150.00... by me i'd be willing to bet closer to 300.00....but then again i don't think that particular variety would be for sale at a nursery. Of course i could be way off base completely too....I'm biting now Kudzu...you have to let us know how much....(reaching for my CC)

I contacted a Washington state nursery who sells it. $120 for a 2 gallon start.

"We sell 2 gallon starts of this bamboo for $120.00 and it goes fast. It is our most beautiful bamboo, still very rare, but in the same breath the fastest growing bamboo I have ever seen! I tell people when they buy this bamboo, 'either contain it or give it plenty of room as this one is a fast mover."-Jade Mountain Bamboo

Money's tight here now, so I can't justify it, but I have many exotic varieties if anyone wants to trade a mailable start.

Hmmm, it seems we can pick them up for £25 ($40) or so on this side of the pond........now if only I can rig up a bamboo export license......

Of course it's only rare until it's invaded the neighborhood.

    Nice nodes. ;)
Worth every penny of the ...[mmmphmumble]...dollars you paid for that beauty.

Ok, I wasn't going to tell because I was too embarrassed, but it was $235. (This from the guy who rails about inflated bamboo prices!) However, it is huge. The pot is 30" in diameter, so I'm thinking that it's about a 50 gallon size. And now I have to get it in the ground. As you can see from this picture, it's anxious to get out of the pot:

For comparison, I also have a 2 gallon one that I got at the Seattle Bamboo Festival for $20, but it will be years before that sizes up; it's about 2 feet high right now.

    Eric-
I have heard that this bamboo moves out pretty quickly, so let's talk next spring or summer. I might have a division for you and we can do a swap. In any case, I'd love to see your garden. It looks fantastic.

Don't feel guilty Kudzu I think it's a fair price.

    Stockwell-
Thanks for the moral support...I needed that.

Part of my rationalization was that I got lucky this April and had the chance to dig about 20 really big divisions of Vivax, Castillon, Ch. quadrangularis, and several other species for $100 total. (I met someone who was selling her 5 acre property and she had a lot of huge, almost out-of-control bamboo she said I could dig.) So, on average, I'm doing fine!

I was only off by 10 bucs. Think that should be worth the first division! Kidding Kudzu, wouldn't do well in the burgh. Nice plant, don't hurt yourself finding it a home.

Well worth it compared to prices of conifers and maples. Bamboo is a good deal-you get your money's worth in a few years tenfold.....

Kudzu, did I mention I have maples to trade. heh-heh-let me know if the boo gets out of hand...great picture!

Kudzu....235, well all i can say is i know i've wasted more than that it my younger days in one night (that's what i always tell myself when i spend more than i feel i should on something). BTW how will that do in z6?? lol....i might call you in 3 or 4 yrs. for a small piece. A nice little buddah guy would look nice with that.
