About deadheading...

Are there any 'rules' about deadheading blooming plants? I snap the dried roses off, but should I be pruning back a little so the stem doesn't just stick up and dry out?

And how about celosia (cockscomb)? It was soooo pretty when I planted it, but it's beginning to spradle out and the bright red blooms are looking washed out. Should I cut them off? If I do, will it bloom again?

In this heat, I could be snipping and snapping for a while since all the buds seem to open, gasp, fry and die. What's your method?

Dorian calling people names is not nice "under any circumstances" so "what is wrong with you" Dorian? I am sure she didn't mean anything by it and maybe it was not in the best of taste, but you on the other hand, you are just plain rude. Trash talking others will get you nowhere on this site. You must be new.

Isn't Celosia WONDERFUL when you 1st plant it? I'll never buy it again. Once those blooms fade they never look the same :( Maybe in California? But not here AARRGGHHHHHH!! Maybe Alan or Judy will be able to answer your Rose ???. My garden is often referred to as Camp Auschwitz for Roses :(

This time of year I only remove spent blooms. When it cools down in October you can give your roses a light pruning, removing candelabra's, and pencil or less, thin stems, that will not produce roses to your satisfaction.

Thanks, Easy, I seem to have a lot of those pencil stems. Er, at least my roses do...

Anyone know more about deadheading celosia or other flowering plants. What do you do, GT; pull 'em up or keep 'em going? They look awful!

prune the spent blooms back to the leaf stems that carry 5 leaves.
