I've heard it is the hardiest of banana plants???

Here in SE Kansas we are zone 6. I am pretty sure this is one of the bananas that were grown by a local gardener. He would cut back and cage several items in his yard and I believe this was one of them along with his basjoo and wind-mill palm. All have come through every winter with great success. This year he was not able to cage his plants due to health constraints but it appears all came back with no protection. That particular plant was removed in spring. I am fairly certain by it's growth pattern that it was a Musella lasiocarpa. Basjoo cad no mulch besides their own leaves and stalks and came back like nobody would know the difference.

I grew two of them last summer. The one in an open location (no mulch) did not return. We got down to around 0 for a winter low.

The one in a microclimate came back just fine. I'm in 7a, so I would think you'd be just fine in 7B. I think like most bananas its foliage is killed around freezing.

I'm in the lower edge of zone 7B (near Birmingham, AL)and my musella survives fine. Frost kills the leaves. I trim the leaves back to the trunk. I build a fence around the clump of trunks and fill the inside of the fence with chopped leaves to protect the trunks. A hard freeze will kill back the soft top tissue but during an average winter, I don't have any problems.

We are in slightly warmer zone and hoping will do well here. When does it bloom? Any trouble with trunk rotting in cold wet weather seasons?
