If you don't already, I would suggest a 1-3" layer of composted mulch. I noticed a major decrease in the watering needs of my tomatoes and overall boost to the growth of the plant when I did. I have also succeeded with a thick layer of straw as mulch.

Afternoon wilting is common here. If the plants aren't perky at sundown, they are really wilting and should be soaked.

I water my raised beds (squash, tomatillos, eggplant) 20-30 minutes by soaker hose every day when it's hot, will cut back to every other day when it cools off in September.

My husband works in an office and brings home the shredded paper they usually throw away, I use this for my mulch, it dosn't look as nice, but it's free and the mulch does make a big difference.

Great ideas on mulch everyone! I also have raised beds, and have laser tubing run through them. Water them for an hour or so daily during this high heat. I have peppers, basil, Armenian cukes, and a tomato. They are doing quite well. The tomato is called "Pineapple". Got it from a man with the Valley of The Sun Garden Club. The plant is huge, and thriving in this heat. Not producing right now, but in the fall should give me a great harvest. Spring did.
