Totally Tomatoes - Sent wrong seed!!!!!

This year I ordered from this company (Totally Tomatoes) a total of 15 packs of tomatoes - Better Boy, Burpee Big Boy, Rutgers, and Early Girl. I was so excited to see my Early Girls grow, knowing they would be the first to ripen, but to my amazement, they are YELLOW TOMATOES! I called the company this morning to advise them it was not the Early Girl and all they could say was, well I guess the supplier made a mistake. To say the least, it was an expensive mistake. Not financially necessarily, but I Winter Sowed 80 Early Girl plants only to get something I don't really like. This plant is rather short as well; I sure hope it is not a determinate tomato. Well, I guess you wonder why I've posted this, but I just wanted you to be aware of this company. Happy growing to all!

Mistakes happen, people are very human.

And suppliers sending wrong seed to a vendor is not unknown. I like TTs customer service because they make immediate replacements. I would not hesitate to recommend this company, I've ordered from them for years and like their service and products.

I had ordered a bulk amount of EG from a different company and as they were sold out and unable to obtain more seeds they sent me Empire Hybrid as a replacement--it's practically the same tomato so I wasn't unhappy with the replacement.

Did you ask for another pack of seed or ask them to send you a replacement pack next season, and if so what did they say they would do?

Also, you might want to share this info on the Growing Tomatoes forum to see if other people have the same experience as you--you might also find out what to expect from the yellow toms you are growing.

Thank you Trudi for your response. Yes, they offered to replace the seed with Early Girl next year or a refund. So I chose the refund instead. They were very cordial, but I was so disappointed I didn't trust them to send the replacement seed next year. I would love to post the plant to maybe receive help in identifying, but have never posted photos before. :) If you have not problem in recommending them, then that says it all. I'll use them again next year. I'll be sure and post at "Growing Tomatoes". Thank you for encouraging me 3 years ago to begin WS. Each year I keep adding more and more - 477 this year. I Wintersowed 201 toms, 67 herbs and vegs, 209 annuals and perennials. I've got to stop!!

Sounds like you've been having both success and fun with WSing. Stopping is not something we can do, and generally, it isn't until a garden is bursting at the seams with plants that a WSer may start to only 'tone it down' a bit by become more selective and purposeful in what they're WSing. A few years back I WSed all the toms in my private stash that were from Russia and Eastern Europe because that is Hubs and my heritage. This year for flower I stuck with wildflowers that attract butterflies.

So, I am sorry that your Early Girls aren't Early Girls but now you have yellow toms and I just love yellow tomato sauce--it's is nirvana. I do hope that you'll like them as much and enjoy them in your kitchen like I do, I don't think they're any more or less acid, or more or less sweet, but you'll find them to be a bit different in overall flavor than red toms, much like most folks think the black/purple group is different in flavor from reds.

Yellow toms are pretty good, but I do understand the "they're NOT red thing, it took me along time to get used to that.....

The important thing is that they took ownership of the mistake and offered you something to make up for it, I guess.

All TOM seeds look alike to me, so I can totally see how some new person goofed up and put the wrong ones in the wrong place.

Ya'll have been so nice to respond... My dear daddy, who is 85 years of age, has taught me all I know when it comes to vegetable gardening. As a child, we children were taught to tend the garden. You name it, we did it. Hoed the garden, picked green beans, stringed the beans, shucked the corn, even sowed beans and corn. Sounds like we were slaves, :>, but Lord knows it was the best days of my life. Those were the good ole days. :> Having said all that, these EGirls were grown for him as well. When I received the call from him stating he thought maybe somehting was wrong with these "red" toms (that are now yellow) I was disppointed for him not me. As the southern gentleman he is, honey don't worry about it, we'll make do. I assured him I had plenty other red tomatoes I was growing and if I had enough to eat on, he would too. It's just nice to walk out the back door and pick your own.

Also, not ever growing determinate toms before,(which I think these are) will they last very long? These plants are very short and full of tom's, maybe 6 - 8 right next to each other. There isn't much foliage as well. I'm looking forward to enjoying the taste of my "yellow" early girls. :> :> lolololol

They sound like DETs. They do set a big bunch of toms within a few weeks, then slow down in fruiting after that. DETs are tomatoes of convenience--most were bred with bulk production as a focus, it makes it easier for the home gaqrdener to do their sauce making practically all at once. This also works out well for commercial canners because they can plan to have their equipment clean and ready at a specific date. DETs also enable you to pull the plants after they've cropped and then give the space over to another crop.

You might check some of the nurseries in your area for 'Early Girl'. Most of our nurseries still have some tomato plants and often large sized ones. Even one or two plants added to your gardens now can help relieve some of the disappoint you both feel.
