sources and viability

Are there any good sized bamboos which will thrive in Nova Scotia and does anyone know of a Canadian source?

Growing bamboo in your Zone will be a challenge, but it can be done...there are several Zone 5 growers on this forum and even one in Zone 4. You will get significant winter damage to aboveground growth (defoliation and loss of culms), but there are bamboo that can bounce back in the spring. I'm sure there are a number of bamboo sources in Canada, but the only one I know is Bamboo World in Chilliwack, which is east of Vancouver, BC. They do ship to all parts of Canada, and will be knowledgeable about what to choose for your location. Here is a link for them:

    BambooWorld

There's no problem with buying bamboo by mail from a reputable source, so you shouldn't let the distance put you off. There are U.S. mail order sources that are closer to you, but I'm not sure if they're allowed to ship into Canada (I know you can't ship bamboo into the U.S. from anywhere without a hard-to-get permit and a lengthy quarantine).

You might also use the Search function at the top of this page to look for posts from hoosier52 who is growing quite a few varieties of bamboo in Zone 5. Good luck.

Come on, Kurt. From what I can tell you're every bit as crazy as I am!

Your probably right Kudzu...I think my wife thinks the same and my kids aren't big enough to think that yet... Funny how all of us "crazies" seem to have found a "home" here...lol

    maqnab-
One other thing. Just make sure that, wherever you buy your bamboo, they are knowledgeable about what will survive in your Zone. Just because a nursery sells a certain bamboo, doesn't mean it's hardy outdoors in your climate. For starters, you can check out the hardiness temperatures for most bamboo by taking a look at:

    BambooWeb

There's an alphabetical list of bamboo with photographs there, and the plant data come up when you click on a picture. The hardiness rating is a rough indicator of the lowest temperature a bamboo can handle: aboveground damage will still occur above this temperature; plant death will occur below it.

The Fargesias are doing well here in northeastern Wisconsin - I bend them over in winter and cover with a sheet. Spring right back in spring when uncovered. New England Bamboo Company is a great source.

I visited Nova Scotia once years ago. One of the things that I recall about it is that it does not get as cold in the winter as one might think because of the ocean currents. Fargesias should do well there because it doesn't get very hot either. I would think that most other temperate bamboos would work too. How cold does it usually get where you are?
